Barbara Wanjala

Barbara Wanjala is a Kenyan writer based in Nairobi. Her work appears in Roads and Kingdoms, The Outline, Chimurenga, Kwani?, among others.

She participated in 2014 Commonwealth Writers’ Creative Non-Fiction workshop in Uganda. She was shortlisted for the 2015 Haller Prize for Development Journalism for her article on the effects of climate change on traditional livelihoods in Senegal. She was also longlisted for the 2017 Koffi Addo Writivism Prize for Creative Non-Fiction. Her literary non-fiction appears in the anthology Safe House: Explorations in Creative Nonfiction (Dundurn Books, 2016). She was awarded a 2016 Investigative Journalism Fellowship with Africa Uncensored (Kenya) and a 2017 Gabriel García Márquez Fellowship in Cultural Journalism (Colombia). She speaks Kiswahili, English and French.
